The Funny People movie, a comedy drama directed and written by Judd Apatow, was released in July in America this year. Adam Sandler plays the lead role. Other actors like Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana and a lot more have a role too. Though it is not a movie you'd like to watch with children because of its liberal dosage of sexually crude humour mixed with R rated language all throughout the movie, you'd enjoy it.
This movie is based on the life history of Judd Apatow. George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a loner who is single permanently. He belongs to the upper level and has earned himself a fortune as a comedian. He is egoistical, abrupt, rude, friendless and lives alone by the Pacific in a huge mansion in Malibu. He is suffering from a blood disorder which is untreatable and has less than a year to live. When he learns about his disease he begins to withdraw from life gradually. When he comes across Ira.
Ira, the second important character, is a stand up, struggling, comedian who is still struggling to find his true stage persona. One night both Ira and George perform at the same club causing George to notice Ira and employ him as his semi-personal assistant. Ira gradually becomes George's friend, punching bag, joke writer and nurse. George establishes Ira in his Malibu house. He likes and dislikes Ira who is impressed by George and ready to do his bidding and please him in every way.
As time goes by, Ira convinces George to let his friends in on his illness. George declares that he is friendless. But, slowly faces from the past start appearing, (mostly old comedians), to hang out with him. The scenes change from the monotonous, depressing life of George to be replaced by scenes from his past which show a George who was fun loving and funny.
The past also shows us about how George fell in love with an actress called Laura who was his one true love and one true regret. His regret was because he had lost her. Laura gave up her career even before it could contribute to making her in to a full fledged star to settle down for a family life with another man (Eric Bana). There is an emotional tear jerking scene involving George and Laura. The character 'Laura' is acted out by Apatow's wife Leslie Mann. Laura's children's role is played by their daughter's in real-life.
