When Princess Diaries first released a few years ago, it surprisingly took the theatres by storm raking in a hefty $100 million. The story of an ordinary looking, clumsy teenager who finds out shes actually a princess of a tiny country called Genovia and her transformation into an elegant beauty under her Royal grandmothers tutelage, captured the attention and the hearts of viewers. Its success left the audience craving for more and so talks began for a sequel in the form of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement that takes the 15 year old geeky princess story forward.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie jumps almost six years with Mia (Anne Hathaway) graduating from an American college and returning to her country, Genovia. Grandma Clarisse (Julie Andrews) decides its time to step aside and hand over her royal responsibility to the Princess on her fast approaching 21st birthday. Opposition to this plan comes not only in the form of Viscount Mabrey (Jonathan Rhys-Davies), who insists that the throne belongs to his nephew, but also from the parliament that decides to uphold an ancient law which states that a Queen must have a husband.
Mias life becomes hectic as she struggles to cope with the many demands of the situation. She not only needs to find herself a consort within 30 days but must also escape the paparazzi and woo the countrys inhabitants. If that isnt enough, she also finds herself drawn towards Nicholas (Chris Pine) who is the evil Viscounts nephew trying to take over the throne. The perfect groom candidate is an Englishman, played by Callum Blue, who fails to make her heart beat like Nicholas, forcing her to consider her difficult choices between country and love.
Both Anne Hathaway as Mia and Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse continue to mesmerize and entertain the audience thoroughly. The rest of the cast as well as director Gary Marshall strive to make a film thats good fun if devoid of lasting life influencing philosophy. Its a great movie for easing the stress of reality and allowing you to get lost in the romantic world of Genovia for a short while.
The movie will most definitely be enjoyed by women of all ages and young men as well, especially those with a romantic heart. Whether the gentlemen will be brave enough to admit they enjoyed the movie is a different story altogether. The princess is modern and independent in her thinking and miles away from the traditional damsel in distress kind of fairy tale character.
